Zermizinga

Zermizinga is a genus of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. These pests are primarily distributed across forest and steppe regions, where their larvae, commonly known as loopers, can inflict significant damage on various trees, shrubs, and occasional agricultural crops.

The host range includes a variety of deciduous trees and woody plants; however, during periods of peak population density, the larvae may migrate to adjacent field crops. Infested plants suffer from the loss of a substantial portion of their foliage, leading to reduced vigor and decreased overall yield potential.

The biological life cycle of this species follows the typical pattern for geometrid moths: it undergoes a complete metamorphosis consisting of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. Overwintering generally occurs in the pupal stage, buried within the soil or protected by leaf litter. Adult moths emerge in the spring or early summer to initiate the next generation.

Feeding damage is characterized by skeletonization or complete consumption of leaves by the caterpillars. The economic impact is linked to the disruption of photosynthesis, which results in stunted shoot growth and premature defoliation. In severe cases, high pest pressure can cause extensive damage to entire stands or orchards.

Control strategies involve an integrated pest management approach:
