Shiny snail

The Shiny snail (Zonitoides nitidus) is a small terrestrial gastropod mollusk classified within the family Gastrodontidae. It thrives in high-moisture environments, making gardens, wetlands, and damp soil areas its primary habitat, where it can easily find adequate shelter and a constant source of food throughout the growing season.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. It is particularly damaging to young vegetable seedlings, soft fruits like strawberries, and various ornamental plants. By feeding during the night or in humid, cloudy weather, the pest remains largely hidden from view while causing significant losses in yield and quality of fresh produce.

The biology of Zonitoides nitidus is deeply linked to hydrological conditions. Being a hermaphroditic species, it can reproduce rapidly when moisture is sufficient, laying eggs in clusters within the damp soil or beneath decaying organic matter. These reproductive cycles allow for fast population expansion, which often leads to severe outbreaks during particularly rainy periods.

The damage caused by these snails includes irregular holes in leaves, stems, and fruits, as well as feeding on roots and underground parts of crops. Besides direct physical destruction, their slime trails contribute to the spread of plant diseases, as the moisture and organic matter in the slime promote the colonization of fungal and bacterial pathogens on the plants.

Integrated management strategies for controlling the shiny snail include the following:

• Maintaining good soil drainage to reduce overall humidity levels.
• Removing debris, mulch piles, and weeds to eliminate potential hiding places.
• Using manual trapping or barriers such as copper tape around garden beds.
• Encouraging natural predators such as carabid beetles, hedgehogs, and insectivorous birds.
• Applying targeted molluscicides containing iron phosphate or metaldehyde when threshold levels are exceeded.
