Nevada dampwood termite

Systematic position: The Nevada dampwood termite (Zootermopsis nevadensis) belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Termopsidae. It is a primitive termite species native to the coniferous forests of North America, adapted specifically to moist and decaying wood environments.

Susceptible materials: This pest primarily targets moist or rotting wood, especially coniferous species like pine and fir. In agricultural and residential settings, it poses a significant threat to wooden structural components, including floor joists, fence posts, and wooden foundations that are in direct contact with damp soil or moisture sources.

Biology and life cycle: The colony structure of the Nevada dampwood termite differs from subterranean species as it lacks a true worker caste. Instead, immature nymphs, known as pseudergates, perform the labor within the colony. The lifecycle is highly dependent on humidity, as these termites cannot survive in dry wood conditions and require constant moisture to maintain their colonies.

Nature of damage: These termites do not build external mud tubes like many other species. They create large, irregular galleries deep within the wood, often hollowed out to the point where structural integrity is severely compromised. The presence of fecal pellets, which have a characteristic hexagonal shape, is a primary indicator of an ongoing infestation inside the wood.

Control measures: Management of this pest focuses on moisture control. Eliminating sources of water, such as leaking pipes or contact between wood and soil, is the most effective preventative measure. Treatment involves:

• Ensuring proper ventilation of crawl spaces and basements.
• Treating wood with borate-based preservatives.
• Removing and replacing heavily infested wood debris.
• Using insecticide barriers for professional pest control intervention.
