Zoothera

The genus Zoothera belongs to the thrush family (Turdidae) within the order Passeriformes. While most members of this genus are primarily insectivorous, in certain agricultural contexts, they can be considered pests of fruit crops, causing damage to berries and buds during migration periods or when natural food sources are limited.

These birds prefer woodland habitats and dense gardens. Damage is most frequently observed on berry-producing shrubs such as raspberries and strawberries, as well as on stone fruit trees during the fruit-set stage. The harm consists of pecking at the yield and inflicting mechanical damage on tender plant tissues and flower buds.

The biology of Zoothera is characterized by seasonal migrations and nesting in forest leaf litter. Their life cycle is highly dependent on climatic conditions; while they are beneficial during the nesting period by consuming agricultural insect pests, the post-fledging flocks often migrate into orchards, posing significant economic risks to commercial fruit production.

The characteristic damage involves erratic pecking of the fruit, leaving the berries torn and marred with deep beak marks. This damage accelerates the onset of rot and secondary infections by pathogenic fungi, which reduces the total harvest volume and renders the produce unsuitable for storage or fresh market sale.

Protection measures include the use of physical barriers such as anti-bird netting for bushes and the deployment of visual deterrents, including reflective tapes or predator decoys. Ultrasonic devices have also proven effective when used consistently, helping to safeguard the harvest while maintaining the ecological balance within the managed area.
