The Japanese white-eye (Zosterops japonica) is a small passerine bird from the Zosteropidae family. While recognized for its role in controlling insect populations, it is categorized as a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly in orchards where it targets ripe fruit during the harvest season.
This species causes damage to a wide range of horticultural crops, including citrus, grapes, persimmons, and various stone fruits. By feeding on the flesh and juices of the fruit, the birds often consume the most profitable portion of the crop, leading to substantial yield losses in orchards.
The biology of the Japanese white-eye involves highly social, flock-based foraging behavior. This social structure allows them to locate fruit sources efficiently. After the breeding season, when large flocks move into agricultural areas, their combined feeding capacity can result in the rapid destruction of fruit clusters in a short period.
The nature of damage is characterized by pecking holes into the skin of ripe fruits. These open wounds serve as entry points for secondary infections, including fungal rots and fermentation, which cause the fruit to spoil rapidly. The presence of damaged fruit also attracts further secondary pests, such as wasps and fruit flies, compounding the loss.
Control measures primarily focus on exclusion and deterrence. The most effective long-term solution in commercial orchards is the use of bird-proof netting, which physically prevents birds from accessing the fruit. In addition, integrated pest management may include the use of acoustic repellers and reflective deterrents to discourage flocks from settling in the orchard area.
