Silvereye

The Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) is a member of the Passeriformes order and Zosteropidae family. Despite its small size and status as a native species in many regions, it is frequently classified as a problematic agricultural pest in Australia and New Zealand due to its destructive feeding habits in commercial orchards.

This bird primarily targets a wide variety of soft, succulent fruits. Major crops affected include grapes, apples, peaches, cherries, figs, and various berry crops. During the peak harvest season, Silvereye flocks can cause extensive financial losses by damaging significant portions of the yield across entire plantations.

The species exhibits high mobility and social behavior, forming large flocks that efficiently locate and exploit food sources. Their lifecycle is closely synchronized with the fruiting phenology of both wild and cultivated plants, allowing them to remain present in agricultural areas throughout the critical maturation periods.

The nature of the damage involves pecking holes into fruits, which immediately compromises their marketability and quality. Damaged fruit typically decays rapidly due to opportunistic fungal infections and microbial growth. This damage leads not only to immediate harvest loss but also increases the risk of spreading fruit-related pathogens.

Effective management strategies rely heavily on physical exclusion, specifically the installation of anti-bird netting over orchards and vineyards. Additional deterrents include:
