Carbon dioxide is officially approved in the European Union as a basic substance for plant protection purposes. Its primary application in agriculture is as a highly effective fumigant used to control pests that infest stored agricultural products, including cereal grains, legumes, and dried fruits.

Chemically, it is classified as an inorganic compound. As a basic substance, it provides a non-toxic alternative to traditional synthetic insecticides, which is critical for maintaining high standards in organic farming and ensuring that the final food products are free from chemical residue contamination.

The mechanism of action involves creating a controlled atmosphere characterized by high carbon dioxide levels and oxygen depletion. This induced anoxia effectively suffocates insects, targeting all developmental stages, including eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults, thereby preventing further degradation of the stored commodities.

Successful application requires high-quality sealing of storage facilities such as silos, warehouses, or shipping containers. The efficacy depends on the duration of exposure to the gas, as maintaining a constant concentration over the required period is essential to ensure a complete mortality of the target pest populations.
