Description
Chlorates, including sodium, potassium, and magnesium salts, represent a group of inorganic compounds that have historically been utilized in agriculture as non-selective herbicides and defoliants. Due to their significant impact on soil biology and inherent fire hazards, their use has been largely restricted or phased out in many agricultural jurisdictions in favor of more modern chemical solutions.
Chemically, these substances are salts of chloric acid. Their mode of action is systemic; upon contact with the foliage, the chemical is absorbed and translocated within the plant. This leads to severe metabolic disruption, specifically targeting oxidative processes, which causes rapid wilting and necrosis of the plant tissue shortly after application.
These compounds are primarily classified as total (non-selective) herbicides and effective defoliants. They were historically used for managing vegetation in non-crop areas, such as industrial sites, roadsides, and railways, as well as for the pre-harvest defoliation of cotton to facilitate mechanical harvesting. They show broad-spectrum activity against both grasses and broad-leaved weeds.
Application requires extreme caution due to the strong oxidizing properties of chlorates. Materials contaminated with chlorate solutions, such as clothing, wood, or organic debris, become highly flammable upon drying. Therefore, stringent safety protocols must be followed during mixing and application, and equipment must be thoroughly cleaned to prevent accidental fires or soil contamination.
