Description
Florasulam belongs to the triazolopyrimidine chemical class and is a highly effective systemic herbicide with selective action. This compound is used exclusively for controlling a wide range of broad-leaved weeds in cereal crops and corn, demonstrating exceptional selectivity toward the cultivated plants while ensuring effective weed management.
The mechanism of action of florasulam is based on the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in target weeds. This leads to the rapid termination of cell division and an immediate cessation of plant growth shortly after application. By blocking the biosynthesis of essential amino acids, the herbicide causes weed death, with visual symptoms typically appearing within 3–5 days.
The product is primarily applied to actively growing weeds, specifically those in the seedling stage up to the 4-6 leaf stage. Some of the most sensitive species include cleavers (Galium aparine), chamomile, common lambsquarters, and shepherd's purse. Florasulam has no restrictions for follow-up crops in the rotation, as it degrades rapidly in the soil environment.
One of the key features of florasulam is its high efficacy even at low air temperatures, starting from +5°C. It exhibits a strong synergistic effect when used in tank mixtures with other herbicides, such as those based on 2,4-D or dicamba, allowing for an expanded weed control spectrum and helping to prevent the development of herbicide resistance in weed populations.
Safety precautions when handling this substance include adhering to standard protective measures. Although it possesses low toxicity to mammals, personal protective equipment for the skin and respiratory system must be used during spraying. It is crucial to monitor wind drift during application, as florasulam is highly active even at very low dosages and may damage sensitive neighboring crops.
