Chlorbromuron

Description

Chlorbromuron is a chemical compound belonging to the class of urea derivatives (phenylureas). This substance is a systemic herbicide with selective action, which has been widely used in agricultural practice to control a broad spectrum of annual broad-leaved and some grassy weeds in field and vegetable crop plantations.

The mechanism of action of chlorbromuron is based on the inhibition of the photosynthesis process. Upon entering the plant through the root system or leaf surface, the active ingredient blocks electron transport in photosystem II. This leads to the cessation of carbohydrate production, the arrest of weed growth, and their subsequent death as a result of chlorosis and tissue necrosis.

The main crops for the application of chlorbromuron traditionally included potatoes, carrots, soybeans, beans, and corn. The preparation demonstrated high efficacy against such problematic weeds as lambsquarters, knotweeds, shepherd's purse, and amaranth species. Depending on soil type and climatic conditions, the substance could be applied either pre-emergence or during early weed development stages.

When using chlorbromuron, it is important to consider the soil type, as its residual activity strongly depends on humus content and the mechanical composition of the soil. On light soils with low organic matter, the risk of the preparation leaching into the root zone of the crop is higher, which requires strict adherence to application rates and depth of incorporation during pre-emergence treatment.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used when preparing the solution.
  • Avoid spray drift onto neighboring sensitive crops.
  • Observe crop rotation as residual effects on sensitive follow-up crops are possible.
  • Storage must be carried out in dry, specifically designated pesticide warehouses.

It is important to remember that chlorbromuron belongs to substances requiring careful handling due to the potential ecological load on soil microflora. Modern agronomy is transitioning toward more selective and less persistent forms of protection, so before application, it is necessary to verify current environmental regulations and ensure the product is listed among authorized plant protection agents for your specific region.
