Chlorthal-dimethyl, often referred to as DCPA, is a pre-emergence herbicide belonging to the benzoic acid derivative chemical class. It is widely utilized in large-scale commercial vegetable production to manage a broad spectrum of annual grasses and specific broadleaf weed species.

The mode of action for chlorthal-dimethyl is the inhibition of mitosis within the meristematic tissues of germinating weed seeds. By forming a protective chemical layer on the soil surface, the herbicide effectively interferes with the root and shoot development of emerging weeds, causing them to perish before they can establish themselves or emerge from the soil surface.

This substance is primarily used for crop protection in vegetable production, including onions, garlic, cabbage, carrots, and tomatoes. Its significant horticultural value lies in its high selectivity, meaning it provides effective weed control without harming the target crop when applied in accordance with registered label rates.

Effective application requires a well-prepared, moist seedbed to ensure uniform distribution of the herbicide barrier.
