Active ingredient

Diuron

Description

Diuron is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the urea derivative chemical class (phenylureas). In agricultural practice, it is used exclusively as a systemic herbicide designed to control a wide spectrum of annual broad-leaved and grass weeds.

The mechanism of action of Diuron involves the inhibition of the photosynthesis process in target plants. Upon entering the weed, the substance blocks electron transport in the light phase of photosynthesis (in photosystem II), leading to an energy production breakdown, leaf chlorosis, wilting, and subsequent death of the unwanted vegetation.

The product is most commonly applied as a soil-active herbicide, creating a protective barrier that prevents weed seed germination. In various regulatory frameworks, it is used for pre-emergence or early post-emergence treatment on crops such as cotton, wheat, citrus, vineyards, and fruit trees, depending on local authorizations and climatic conditions.

When using Diuron, it is critical to adhere to application rates, as an excess can lead to crop phytotoxicity. The effectiveness of the product is directly dependent on soil moisture and precipitation levels, which facilitate better absorption of the active ingredient into the root zone of the weeds.

  • Provides a prolonged protective period of up to 2-3 months.
  • Effective against a wide spectrum of weed grasses and broad-leaved weeds.
  • Characterized by low volatility and high stability.
  • Requires precise dosage adjustment based on soil type and organic matter content.

Safety precautions when handling Diuron include the use of full personal protective equipment: respirators, gloves, and protective eyewear. The substance is classified as moderately toxic, therefore, during application, it is essential to prevent spray drift to adjacent fields and avoid runoff into water bodies, as the chemical has significant toxicity to aquatic organisms.
