(E)-11-Tetradecen-1-yl acetate
Description
(E)-11-Tetradecen-1-yl acetate is a synthetic compound categorized as a long-chain unsaturated alcohol acetate (SCLP). It functions as a potent sex pheromone mimic, widely recognized in agricultural research for its ability to manipulate the reproductive behavior of specific lepidopteran insect species. It serves as a cornerstone for modern, non-toxic pest management programs.
The primary mechanism of action is mating disruption. By releasing the pheromone into the crop canopy, growers increase the ambient concentration of the scent to a level that masks the natural signals emitted by females. Consequently, males are unable to locate mates, which leads to a significant decrease in mating events, egg-laying, and subsequent larval infestation in the crops.
This substance is commonly applied in orchards and vineyards to target specific pests such as leafrollers and other moth species. By utilizing pheromones rather than broad-spectrum insecticides, farmers can protect their yield while maintaining the health of beneficial insect populations, such as pollinators and predators, ensuring a more balanced and sustainable agro-ecosystem.
Successful application requires proper timing and technique. Pheromone dispensers must be installed before the onset of the insect's flight period to ensure the communication disruption is effective from the very beginning. The spatial distribution of the dispensers within the field is critical, as it must create a uniform "fog" of pheromone that covers the entire target area.
While the substance is environmentally benign and poses no threat to human health or the environment, users should adhere to these precautionary guidelines:
- Always use gloves during installation to prevent personal contamination and cross-contamination between areas.
- Store the dispensers in sealed containers in a cool, dry place to maintain the stability of the active chemical ingredient.
- Ensure that the application density matches the manufacturer’s recommendations for the specific pest species present in the field.
