Description
EDTA and its salts (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) are widely used in agriculture as efficient chelating agents. While not classified as pesticides, they are fundamental components in the formulation of high-quality micronutrient fertilizers and as enhancers for various foliar-applied crop protection solutions.
The chemical role of EDTA is to form stable, water-soluble metal complexes (chelates). By surrounding metal ions like iron, manganese, zinc, and copper, EDTA prevents these minerals from binding with soil particles or chemical impurities, keeping them fully available for plant uptake through the roots or leaf surfaces.
The mechanism of action relies on the stability constant of the EDTA complex, which ensures that micronutrients remain in a mobile and bioavailable state in the soil solution. This prevents the formation of insoluble hydroxides or phosphates that would otherwise render these essential minerals "locked" and useless for plant metabolism.
These agents are applied across various crops, including cereals, fruits, and hydroponic greenhouse vegetables. They are particularly vital in high-intensity farming systems where precise nutrient management is required to prevent chlorosis and ensure optimal enzyme function and chlorophyll production within the plant tissue.
Application requires careful monitoring of the soil or solution pH. EDTA is most effective within a moderate pH range (typically 4.0–6.5). Users should avoid excessive concentrations to prevent potential nutrient imbalances and ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding soil chemical properties, as excess EDTA can influence the mobility of other soil elements.
