(E,E)-7,9-Dodecadien-1-yl acetate

Description

(E,E)-7,9-Dodecadien-1-yl acetate is a synthetic replicate of the sex pheromone produced by the female codling moth (Cydia pomonella). It belongs to the chemical class of unsaturated long-chain aliphatic acetates. In modern integrated pest management (IPM), it is used as a biotechnical tool rather than a lethal insecticide, focusing on behavioral modification of the pest population.

The core mechanism is known as mating disruption. By deploying dispensers that release a constant amount of this acetate throughout the orchard, the air becomes saturated with the pheromone. Male moths are unable to follow the pheromone plumes emitted by natural females, which prevents successful mating and suppresses the next generation of larvae that would otherwise damage the fruit.

It is primarily utilized in pome fruit orchards, including apple, pear, and quince crops. This substance is an essential component of sustainable agriculture, as it helps growers reduce reliance on broad-spectrum synthetic insecticides, thereby protecting non-target species such as predatory mites, bees, and ladybirds.

Application requires careful strategic planning. Dispensers should be installed in the upper third of the tree canopy before the first moth flight of the season begins. The technology is most effective when applied across large contiguous areas, as the disruption effect is diluted if the treated zone is surrounded by uncontrolled populations that may migrate into the orchard.

Safety precautions are minimal compared to conventional pesticides, as the substance is non-toxic to mammals, birds, and beneficial insects. There are no residues on fruit, making it ideal for orchards aiming for organic or low-residue certifications. Standard handling practices, such as wearing gloves during installation to prevent skin contact and storing in cool, dry areas, are recommended to maintain the longevity of the pheromone load.
