Elemental Iron

Elemental iron is a key active ingredient used in agriculture as a highly effective molluscicide. It is primarily utilized in the formulation of baits designed to manage and control slug and snail populations. In contrast to traditional metaldehyde-based products, elemental iron is recognized for its safer environmental profile and minimal impact on non-target species.

The mechanism of action involves the ingestion of the iron-based bait by the gastropod. Once inside the mollusc's digestive system, the iron particles trigger oxidative stress and severe physiological damage to the digestive tract. This causes the pest to cease feeding immediately, leading to a quick reduction in plant damage, followed by the death of the pest within a few days.

This substance is applied to a wide array of crops, including leafy vegetables, strawberries, ornamental flowers, and nursery plants. It is particularly effective in high-humidity environments, such as greenhouses or during rainy seasons, where slug and snail activity is at its peak and can cause rapid destruction of foliage and young seedlings.

Application techniques involve distributing the bait pellets uniformly across the soil surface around the base of the plants. It is crucial to ensure that the bait is placed where pests are known to hide or forage. Since elemental iron eventually breaks down into non-toxic iron forms that are naturally found in soil, it serves as a sustainable solution for integrated pest management programs.

Safety precautions for the use of elemental iron are relatively straightforward due to its low toxicity toward mammals, birds, and beneficial insects like bees and earthworms.
