Active ingredient

Metaldehyde

Description

Metaldehyde is a highly specialized active ingredient belonging to the cyclic aldehyde class. In global agriculture, it is classified as a potent molluscicide used exclusively to control terrestrial gastropods, primarily slugs and snails. These pests represent a significant threat to various agricultural and horticultural crops by feeding on seedlings, leaves, and fruits.

The mechanism of action of metaldehyde is targeted at the mucus-producing cells of mollusks. Upon contact or ingestion, the substance triggers an excessive production of mucus, leading to severe dehydration of the pest. This process eventually results in the paralysis and mortality of the mollusk, effectively reducing the population in the treated area.

Metaldehyde is commonly applied to a variety of crops, including vegetables, berries, ornamentals, and cereals. It is typically formulated as pelleted baits. These pellets are scattered across the soil surface or around the perimeter of the crop area, where they act as an attractant for slugs and snails, ensuring they consume the active substance.

For optimal results, applications should be timed during periods of high pest activity, which usually occurs under cool and humid conditions, often in the evenings or early mornings. Users should be aware that the efficacy of the pellets can be affected by heavy rainfall, which may cause degradation. In such cases, supplemental applications may be required to maintain a protective barrier.

Safety is a priority when handling metaldehyde, as the compound can be toxic to mammals and pets if ingested. It must be stored in secure containers away from animals and food. Personnel applying the product should wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves to minimize skin contact. Always follow local regulations regarding dosage and environmental protection to ensure safe and effective use.
