Description

The object is a synthetic blend of lepidopteran pheromones, specifically (E,Z)-9-dodecen-1-yl acetate, (E,Z)-9-dodecen-1-ol, and (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate. These compounds are categorized as synthetic analogs of insect sex pheromones, which function as semiochemicals. These substances are widely utilized in integrated pest management (IPM) as biorational tools to control insect populations without relying on conventional neurotoxic insecticides.

The mechanism of action is based on the mating disruption technique. By permeating the atmosphere of an orchard or field with high concentrations of these synthetic pheromones, male insects become unable to track the scent trails emitted by virgin females. This interference prevents successful mating, significantly reducing the reproductive output of the target pest species across subsequent generations.

These pheromones are primarily used against various species of moths, including leafrollers and fruit borers, which pose significant threats to apple, grape, and vegetable crops. The application is effective both for seasonal population monitoring via specific traps and for large-scale mating disruption programs designed to suppress economic damage caused by larvae.

Field implementation requires careful planning regarding the density of dispensers per hectare to ensure a consistent vapor barrier throughout the crop's canopy. The effectiveness is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and wind conditions, which dictate the release rate of the active ingredients. It is essential to deploy these tools just before the peak emergence of the target moth population.

Safety precautions for handling pheromone-based products include using gloves to prevent cross-contamination of the dispensers with human odors, which could decrease their efficacy. While these compounds are generally non-toxic to humans and wildlife, they should be stored in original sealed packaging in a cool, dry place to maintain chemical stability. Proper disposal of used dispensers at the end of the season is recommended to keep the environment clean.
