Description

Fentin hydroxide is an organotin compound widely recognized for its strong fungicidal and antifeedant properties. Chemically classified as a triphenyltin derivative, it acts primarily as a protective fungicide, preventing fungal pathogens from establishing colonies on the surface of host plants.

The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation in fungal mitochondria. By disrupting the ATP synthesis process, the compound starves the fungal cells of necessary energy, causing rapid inhibition of growth and preventing spore germination. This makes it a critical tool in integrated pest management against resistant pathogen strains.

Common applications include control of late blight in potatoes and leaf spot diseases in sugar beets. Because of its antifeedant properties, it is also utilized to protect crops from specific types of insects, acting as a deterrent that inhibits feeding and reduces the overall damage caused by pests in agricultural fields.

Application requires careful attention to coverage, as fentin hydroxide works primarily through contact. Its excellent rain-fastness makes it a reliable choice under changing weather conditions. Growers must ensure that application rates strictly follow label instructions to maximize efficacy while minimizing unnecessary exposure to the crop and environment.
