Fenuron

Fenuron is a chemical compound belonging to the urea derivative class, specifically phenylureas. It serves as a systemic herbicide used primarily for vegetation management. Historically, it was widely recognized for its ability to control a broad spectrum of herbaceous and woody weeds by targeting their metabolic processes.

The mode of action of fenuron is centered on the inhibition of photosynthesis. Upon uptake through the root system, the substance interferes with electron transport within photosystem II. This disruption prevents the plant from generating the chemical energy required for survival, leading to progressive yellowing of leaves, necrosis, and the eventual death of the treated weed.

The primary use of fenuron is on non-crop land, such as industrial sites, railway embankments, and areas where total vegetation control is required. Because of its persistence and potential for long-term residual activity in the soil, its use in food crop production has been largely phased out or strictly restricted in many modern agricultural regulations.

Application specifics largely depend on soil conditions. Since fenuron acts primarily through soil uptake, its effectiveness is dictated by moisture levels and organic matter content. Soils with higher organic content may require higher application rates, as the organic particles tend to bind the chemical, potentially reducing its bioavailability for the target weeds.
