Fluroxypyr
Description
Fluroxypyr is a highly potent active ingredient belonging to the pyridine carboxylic acid chemical class. It functions as a systemic, selective post-emergence herbicide, primarily used to target difficult-to-control broadleaf weeds in various field crops.
The mode of action of fluroxypyr mimics the natural plant hormone auxin. Upon absorption by the plant, it disrupts normal growth processes by causing abnormal cell division and elongation. This leads to the characteristic twisting and curling of stems and leaves, ultimately resulting in the systemic death of the target weed.
It is predominantly applied in crops such as wheat, barley, corn, and oats, as well as on pastures and turf. Fluroxypyr is particularly valued by agronomists for its outstanding effectiveness against tough weeds such as cleavers (Galium aparine), field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), and various buckwheat species that are resistant to other common herbicides.
Optimal application timing is crucial for success, with the best results obtained when weeds are in their active growth phase. Because it is highly selective, it does not damage cereal crops while effectively clearing the field of competing vegetation, often serving as a key component in resistance management programs.
Safety and handling are paramount when using this herbicide. Operators must wear appropriate protective equipment to avoid skin and eye contact. Furthermore, care should be taken to minimize spray drift, as non-target broadleaf crops are highly sensitive to fluroxypyr exposure and can suffer significant damage even from minor drift.
