Guazatine
Description
Guazatine is a highly effective contact fungicide belonging to the guanidine chemical class. It is primarily utilized in modern agriculture as a seed dressing agent, providing essential protection for seeds during storage and germination against a wide range of seed-borne and soil-borne pathogens.
The mechanism of action of guazatine centers on its ability to disrupt the cellular membranes of fungi. By interfering with the membrane permeability of the target pathogens, the substance induces leakage of essential cytoplasmic components, leading to the rapid inhibition of fungal growth and eventual cell death.
Guazatine is widely applied to various crops, including cereals, vegetables, and technical crops. It is particularly effective in controlling significant diseases, such as:
- bunt and smuts;
- Fusarium root rot;
- Helminthosporium blight;
- seed mold and damping-off.
In terms of application, it is crucial to ensure thorough and uniform coating of the seeds to maximize the protective effect. Guazatine is often formulated in combination with other active ingredients to broaden the spectrum of protection, but application protocols must be followed strictly to avoid phytotoxicity if concentrations exceed the recommended limits.
Safety precautions when handling guazatine are mandatory due to its toxicity. Operators must wear full personal protective equipment, including respirators, chemical-resistant gloves, and protective goggles, to prevent exposure. Proper storage in original, clearly labeled containers away from food and animal feed is essential for environmental and human safety.
