It acts as an optically active isomer (R-isomer), providing superior herbicidal activity and selectivity compared to the standard racemic mixture. The mode of action of Mecoprop-P is categorized as synthetic auxins. Upon absorption by the leaves, the substance is translocated through the phloem to the meristematic tissues of the weeds. This causes rapid and uncontrolled growth, disrupting cell division and photosynthesis, which leads to the eventual collapse of the weed's vascular system and death.
