Description
Mecoprop-P is a systemic, selective post-emergence herbicide belonging to the phenoxycarboxylic acid family. It acts as an optically active isomer (R-isomer), providing superior herbicidal activity and selectivity compared to the standard racemic mixture. It is widely used in global agricultural practices to ensure high yields of cereal crops.
The mode of action of Mecoprop-P is categorized as synthetic auxins. Upon absorption by the leaves, the substance is translocated through the phloem to the meristematic tissues of the weeds. This causes rapid and uncontrolled growth, disrupting cell division and photosynthesis, which leads to the eventual collapse of the weed's vascular system and death.
It is primarily applied for the control of various annual and perennial broadleaf weeds. Common targets include species such as Stellaria media, Galium aparine, Rumex spp., and various species of plantain. Its effectiveness is particularly pronounced when weeds are young and actively growing, ensuring a clean field for the development of main crops.
This active substance is commonly used in cereals like wheat, barley, oats, and rye, as well as in professional lawn care and turf management. Because it is highly selective, it is often combined with other herbicide groups to manage difficult-to-control species and prevent the build-up of weed resistance within a specific crop field rotation.
- Apply during active weed growth for maximum efficacy.
- Avoid application under extreme temperatures or drought stress.
- Ensure uniform spray coverage using calibrated equipment.
- Follow local regulatory guidelines for buffer zones and spray drift.
Safety precautions during handling are essential for all agricultural workers. Mecoprop-P requires the use of standard protective gear, including chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. It is classified as potentially harmful to aquatic life, so spraying near water sources should be strictly controlled, and disposal of empty containers must comply with environmental regulations.
