Methyl bromide
Description
Methyl bromide (bromomethane) is a highly volatile organobromine compound that has been widely used as a powerful fumigant. Historically, it served as the primary solution for the total control of insects, nematodes, weeds, and pathogens in soil, as well as for the protection of stored agricultural commodities from pests.
The substance functions as a broad-spectrum fumigant. Its mechanism of action involves penetrating the biological membranes of pests, where it disrupts essential metabolic processes and inhibits vital enzymes. This effective disruption leads to rapid mortality in pests across all life stages, making it exceptionally reliable for high-density materials like grain silos or shipping containers.
In agriculture, it was extensively applied for soil sterilization before planting high-value crops like strawberries, tomatoes, and ornamental plants to eliminate soil-borne diseases. Furthermore, it remained a key tool for international phytosanitary quarantine procedures, ensuring that traded plant materials were completely free of invasive species.
Application requires extreme technical precision, including the use of gas-tight covers and specialized monitoring equipment to maintain specific concentrations. Due to its high toxicity to humans and non-target organisms, stringent safety protocols, including full protective gear and mandatory post-treatment ventilation periods, are strictly required for any handling.
It is crucial to acknowledge that methyl bromide is classified as an ozone-depleting substance. Under the Montreal Protocol, its production and consumption have been phased out globally, with limited exceptions for critical quarantine and pre-shipment purposes. Farmers and industrial operators are now shifting toward safer, environmentally compliant alternatives such as phosphine, sulfuryl fluoride, or integrated pest management systems.
