Metosulam
Description
Metosulam is a potent active ingredient classified within the triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide chemical group. It functions as a selective systemic herbicide primarily designed to manage broadleaf weed infestations in cereal crops, such as wheat and barley, as well as in maize cultivation.
The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme. By blocking this essential enzyme, the herbicide effectively halts the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids, specifically valine, leucine, and isoleucine. This metabolic disruption causes rapid cessation of cell division and eventual death of the target weeds.
Metosulam provides excellent control over a variety of economically significant weeds, including cleavers (Galium aparine), chickweed, shepherd’s purse, and various brassica species. Its systemic nature ensures that the compound is translocated throughout the weed, allowing it to reach and destroy vital growth points even in well-established plants.
Field application is most effective when weeds are at the young, actively growing stage. Metosulam is highly valued for its compatibility with various tank-mix partners, allowing farmers to tailor their weed management programs. It also exhibits residual soil activity, which provides a beneficial suppression of subsequent weed germination flushes.
- Effective control of hard-to-kill broadleaf weeds.
- Low dosage application rates.
- High crop selectivity and safety margin.
- Strong systemic and soil activity profile.
Users must follow standard safety precautions when handling concentrated chemical products, including the use of protective clothing and equipment. Furthermore, while Metosulam is generally safe for subsequent crops, agronomists should always consult specific product labels to determine rotational crop restrictions based on soil type and environmental conditions.
