Mild isolate of Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (Tobago-R23)
Description
The mild isolate of Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (Tobago-R23) functions as a biological protection agent designed to manage the threat of severe ToBRFV outbreaks. It is effectively used as a prophylactic measure, based on the principle of cross-protection, where an attenuated viral strain is intentionally applied to the crop to induce resistance against more virulent pathotypes.
The mechanism of action relies on viral interference. By pre-colonizing the plant tissues with the Tobago-R23 strain, the host plant develops an adaptive immune response. This systemic resistance makes it significantly harder for the highly destructive wild-type ToBRFV to invade and multiply within the host, thereby preventing severe plant stunting, mosaic leaf symptoms, and fruit necrosis.
This biological agent is primarily utilized in greenhouse tomato production. Given the highly contagious nature of ToBRFV through mechanical transmission and seeds, utilizing the mild isolate allows farmers to maintain stable productivity in environments where the disease is endemic and cannot be fully eradicated through standard sanitation measures.
Application procedures are highly specific and must be executed during the nursery stage. Seedlings are inoculated in a controlled environment to ensure complete systemic infection with the mild strain before they are transplanted into the greenhouse. This ensures the plant is protected throughout its entire phenological cycle against any secondary exposure to the pathogen.
Safety precautions are essential when handling Tobago-R23. Although the isolate is mild, it remains a virus. Strict hygiene protocols must be implemented to ensure the isolate does not contaminate nearby susceptible crops that have not undergone the immunization program. Furthermore, proper post-harvest sanitation of greenhouses is required to manage viral load and prevent the buildup of inoculum in the growing medium.
