Sainfoin (dried pellets)
Description
Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) in the form of dried pellets is a highly valued agricultural product, primarily used as a functional feed additive for livestock. Unlike conventional synthetic pesticides, sainfoin provides natural health benefits to animals and contributes to sustainable soil management through the improvement of organic nitrogen content.
The primary active chemical components of sainfoin are condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins). These natural compounds are widely recognized for their biological activity, specifically their ability to bind with proteins. This unique chemical profile classifies sainfoin as a potent nutritional supplement with inherent antiparasitic properties against gastrointestinal nematodes.
The mechanism of action involves the direct interaction of tannins with parasitic proteins, which inhibits the maturation and reproductive capabilities of endoparasites in animals. In a forage context, these compounds prevent excessive protein degradation in the rumen, thereby increasing nutrient utilization efficiency and significantly reducing the risk of bloat (tympanites) in ruminants.
In agricultural practice, sainfoin pellets are applied as a feed supplement to improve overall animal health and weight gain. Furthermore, when applied to soil, the biomass serves as a source of slow-release nitrogen and helps suppress certain soil-borne pathogens, acting as a natural soil amendment in integrated farming systems.
Safety precautions include maintaining proper storage conditions to prevent moisture absorption, which could lead to mold development and degradation of active tannins.
- Keep containers sealed in a cool, dry area.
- Ensure a balanced dietary inclusion rate.
- Minimize dust exposure during handling.
