Petroleum oils

Petroleum oils, often referred to as horticultural or mineral oils, are refined petroleum derivatives used extensively as contact insecticides and acaricides. These substances play a crucial role in modern agriculture by providing a non-toxic, physical method for managing a variety of soft-bodied agricultural pests.

The mode of action of petroleum oils is primarily physical rather than biochemical. Upon application, the oil forms a thin film over the pest's body, which blocks the spiracles (breathing pores), leading to the suffocation of the insect. Furthermore, the film interferes with the egg-laying behavior of adult pests and disrupts the development of eggs deposited on the treated surface.

These oils are widely used on fruit trees, ornamentals, citrus, and various vegetable crops. They are particularly effective against scale insects, mites, aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies. They are often applied during the dormant season to control overwintering populations, preventing outbreaks during the subsequent growing season.

When applying petroleum oils, it is essential to ensure thorough coverage to achieve the desired effect, as the product must physically coat the target pest to be effective. Application should be avoided during extreme weather conditions—specifically high heat or freezing temperatures—to prevent damage to the foliage and buds of the host plants.

Safety and compatibility are critical factors in the use of petroleum oils. Users must avoid tank-mixing these oils with sulfur-containing fungicides or products like captan, as this combination can cause severe phytotoxicity. Always check the label for compatibility with other pesticides to ensure the health of the crop and the success of the treatment.
