Pinoxaden

Pinoxaden belongs to the phenylpyrazoline chemical class and functions as a highly selective systemic herbicide. It is primarily used for the post-emergence control of a wide range of annual grass weeds in various cereal crops, making it a critical tool in modern grain production systems.

The mode of action of pinoxaden involves the systemic inhibition of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme. By blocking this enzyme, the herbicide disrupts the synthesis of fatty acids in meristematic tissues, which prevents the plant from maintaining its cell membranes. This process leads to the rapid cessation of growth, leaf chlorosis, and eventual death of the susceptible weed species.

It is specifically designed for use on crops such as wheat and barley. Pinoxaden is effective against problematic grass weeds, including wild oats (Avena fatua), foxtails (Setaria spp.), ryegrass, and barnyard grass. Its excellent selectivity allows crops to break down the compound safely, preventing crop injury while providing long-lasting control of competing weeds.

Application strategies focus on treating weeds during their active growth phase, typically from the two-leaf stage to the tillering stage. The incorporation of specifically formulated surfactants or adjuvants is often required to enhance absorption through the leaf surface, especially under variable environmental conditions. Pinoxaden is noted for its flexibility, as it remains effective across a broad range of temperatures.
