Primisulfuron

Description

Primisulfuron is an active ingredient belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical class, widely used as a systemic, selective herbicide in agricultural practice. It is primarily designed to manage troublesome weeds in maize crops, offering high efficacy through post-emergence application.

The mode of action of primisulfuron involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in target plants. By interfering with the biosynthesis of essential amino acids such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine, the herbicide causes rapid cessation of plant growth, followed by visible symptoms of chlorosis and eventual necrosis of the weed tissues.

The product is specifically registered for use on maize crops. It provides excellent control over a broad range of both grass weeds, including quackgrass, and various broad-leaved species. The selectivity is achieved through the metabolic ability of maize to rapidly degrade the herbicide into non-toxic compounds.

Successful application of primisulfuron depends on the physiological state of the weeds. It should be applied when weeds are actively growing to ensure systemic uptake and translocation throughout the plant. Soil moisture levels and ambient temperatures significantly influence the speed and effectiveness of the herbicide performance.

  • High systemic activity.
  • Low application rates per hectare.
  • Effective against perennial grass weeds.
  • Good selectivity in maize crops.

Safety is a priority when handling primisulfuron-based formulations. Operators must strictly follow safety regulations, including the use of protective clothing and respirators. Additionally, farmers must observe crop rotation guidelines, as residues of the herbicide can occasionally affect sensitive rotational crops depending on soil conditions and pH levels.
