Propaquizafop
Description
Propaquizafop is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate chemical class. It acts as a systemic, selective post-emergence herbicide. It is primarily used in modern agriculture to control a wide range of annual and perennial grass weeds in various broad-leaved crops without harming the main cultivated plant.
The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme. By blocking this enzyme, the herbicide disrupts fatty acid synthesis in the meristematic tissues of target weeds. Propaquizafop is rapidly absorbed through the leaves and translocated throughout the plant system, reaching the roots and rhizomes, which is essential for the effective control of persistent weeds like couch grass.
This herbicide is utilized on crops such as sugar beet, sunflower, soybean, rapeseed, potatoes, and various vegetable crops. Its selectivity is its most valuable asset, allowing farmers to eliminate competitive grasses even if the crop is in a mature vegetative stage. This flexibility makes it a cornerstone of integrated weed management programs.
For optimal results, applications should be timed with the active growth phase of the weeds. Annual grass weeds are best targeted at the 2–4 leaf stage, while perennial grasses should be treated when they have reached a height of 10–15 cm. The herbicide shows excellent rainfastness, as it is absorbed into the leaf surface shortly after application, making it reliable under varying environmental conditions.
- Excellent efficacy against difficult perennial grasses like Elymus repens.
- Rapid systemic action with initial signs of stress visible within days.
- High compatibility with tank mixes for broad-spectrum weed control.
- Minimal risk of soil persistence or negative effects on crop rotation.
Safety measures must be strictly followed when handling Propaquizafop. Applicators should wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection. It is critical to prevent spray drift onto non-target cereal crops, as they are susceptible to the herbicide's action. All chemical storage must be in a secure, well-ventilated area away from food supplies and water sources.
