Purpureocillium lilacinum strain PL 11
Description
Purpureocillium lilacinum strain PL 11 is a highly specialized biological control agent derived from naturally occurring fungi. Classified as a biological nematicide, this active substance is specifically designed to combat various types of soil-borne plant-parasitic nematodes, including root-knot, cyst-forming, and stem nematodes that pose a serious threat to global crop production.
The mode of action of this fungus is highly aggressive toward the parasite's life cycle. The hyphae of Purpureocillium lilacinum infect the eggs and juveniles of nematodes. By secreting extracellular enzymes such as serine proteases and chitinases, the fungus degrades the nematode eggshell, effectively preventing the development of the parasite and significantly reducing the number of infective larvae in the soil.
This agent is extensively used in the protection of high-value crops, including solanaceous vegetables like tomatoes and peppers, as well as cucumbers, ornamentals, and various berries. It is particularly valued in greenhouse environments where high humidity and temperature create favorable conditions for both the pests and the biological agent to thrive, allowing for sustainable soil management.
For optimal application, the product should be introduced directly into the root zone via soil drenching or drip irrigation systems. The fungus requires specific environmental conditions to establish colonies in the rhizosphere; therefore, maintaining consistent soil moisture and moderate temperatures is crucial for success. It is best applied preventively to ensure the soil is protected before nematode population levels become critical.
Regarding safety measures, Purpureocillium lilacinum is considered environmentally friendly and safe for mammals, birds, and non-target beneficial insects. However, standard hygiene practices should be followed when handling the concentrated formulation to prevent eye or respiratory irritation. It is also recommended to avoid tank-mixing with harsh chemical fungicides that could inhibit the fungal growth required for the product's effectiveness.
