Purpureocillium lilacinum strain 251

Description

Purpureocillium lilacinum strain 251 is a highly effective entomopathogenic fungus recognized globally as a biological nematicide. Formerly classified as Paecilomyces lilacinus, this strain has become a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture due to its ability to control harmful plant-parasitic nematodes. It serves as an essential alternative to traditional synthetic chemical nematicides, which often have negative impacts on the soil environment.

The fungus acts as a specialized parasite, targeting the reproductive cycle of nematodes. Upon contact with nematode eggs, the hyphae of Purpureocillium lilacinum secrete enzymes such as proteases and chitinases. These enzymes degrade the protective outer layers of the nematode eggs, ultimately leading to the destruction of the developing embryos. By significantly reducing the number of eggs that hatch into larvae, the fungus effectively suppresses the pest population in the soil.

This biological agent is widely used on a variety of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants, both in field conditions and in greenhouse environments. It is specifically targeted against root-knot, cyst, and lesion nematodes. Because it acts selectively, it helps maintain the balance of beneficial soil microbiota, promoting a healthier rhizospheric environment compared to broad-spectrum chemical treatments.

Successful application requires placing the fungus in close proximity to the plant roots, where it can colonize the rhizosphere. The ideal conditions for its activity involve moist soil and moderate temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 30°C. Once established, the fungus continues to exert control over nematode populations, providing a sustained protective barrier that allows the plant to thrive without being stunted by nematode feeding.

  • Highly effective against major nematode species.
  • Environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
  • Safe for beneficial insects and non-target organisms.
  • Compatible with integrated pest management programs.

Regarding safety and handling, users should follow standard protocols for handling biological pesticide products. It is recommended to use basic personal protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contact during the application process. The product should be stored in a cool, dark, and dry environment to maintain the viability of the fungal spores, ensuring maximum efficacy when it is ultimately introduced into the soil.
