The substance inhibits the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), which is essential for fatty acid synthesis in grasses. As a result, cell membrane production ceases, leading to the rapid stoppage of plant growth and eventual death.

This herbicide is registered for use in numerous crops, including soybeans, sugar beets, sunflowers, oilseed rape, and potatoes.
