Straight Chain Lepidopteran Pheromones (SCLPs) - Acetates

Description

Straight Chain Lepidopteran Pheromones (SCLPs) - Acetates are a category of biochemical active ingredients used in integrated pest management (IPM) to control moth populations. These compounds are synthetically produced mimics of the naturally occurring pheromones that female moths release to attract mates, specifically belonging to the acetate chemical class.

The primary mode of action for these substances is mating disruption. By saturating the atmosphere in a field or orchard with the scent of the female's sex pheromone, the male moths are unable to locate the actual females. This confusion prevents successful mating, significantly reducing the pest population in the subsequent generation without harming the insect directly.

SCLPs are utilized across various agricultural landscapes, such as orchards (apples, pears, stone fruits), vineyards, and high-value vegetable crops. They are specifically targeted against economically damaging lepidopteran pests, including leafrollers, codling moths, and various cutworm species that can devastate crop yields and quality.

Implementation requires the strategic placement of dispensers throughout the cultivation area before the anticipated flight period of the target pest. The density of dispensers is critical; proper spatial distribution ensures a uniform "pheromone cloud" across the site, preventing "hot spots" where pests might successfully breed. Monitoring with specialized traps is often necessary to track the efficacy of the disruption.

  • Non-toxic biological control method with no residues on produce.
  • Does not target or harm beneficial insects, predators, or pollinators.
  • Environmentally friendly with zero impact on water or soil health.
  • Requires minimal labor after the initial installation of dispensers.

While SCLPs - Acetates pose no toxicological risk to human health, standard precautions such as wearing protective gloves during the handling of dispensers are advised to prevent contamination. The products should be kept in original, sealed packaging in a cool environment to maintain the chemical stability and longevity of the pheromone compound before deployment.
