Straight Chain Lepidopteran Pheromones (alcohols)

Description

Straight Chain Lepidopteran Pheromones (SCLPs) — alcohols are a class of bioactive compounds used in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. These substances replicate the chemical signals produced by female moths to attract males for mating purposes, functioning as highly specific biological control agents.

The primary mechanism of action is mating disruption. By releasing these pheromones into the crop canopy, the males' ability to track the scent of females is hindered. This confusion prevents successful mating, significantly reducing the pest population in the subsequent generation and minimizing damage to agricultural crops.

These pheromones are utilized across various cropping systems, including pome fruits, stone fruits, vineyards, and field crops. They are particularly effective in managing major lepidopteran pests such as codling moths, leafrollers, and various cutworm species that cause severe yield losses if left uncontrolled.

Application techniques involve the use of specialized dispensers, emitters, or monitoring traps. The strategic placement of these devices is crucial for success, as it relies on achieving a consistent concentration of the pheromone vapor throughout the area of the orchard or field where pest pressure is detected.

  • Safe for beneficial insects and non-target organisms.
  • Minimal risk of environmental contamination.
  • No residue issues, facilitating organic crop production.
  • Prevents the development of pest resistance.

Safety precautions during installation require operators to handle pheromone dispensers with care, often using gloves to avoid scent transfer. Storage must be strictly managed in cool, dry conditions, ideally in a refrigerator or freezer, to maintain the potency and chemical stability of the alcohol-based pheromones before they are deployed in the field.
