Active ingredient

Sulcotrione

Description

Sulcotrione is an active ingredient belonging to the triketone chemical class, primarily utilized as a selective systemic herbicide. It is widely employed in agricultural practices for the post-emergence control of a variety of broad-leaved weeds and certain grasses, particularly in maize cultivation.

The herbicidal action of sulcotrione targets the 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (4-HPPD) enzyme. By inhibiting this enzyme, the compound disrupts the biosynthesis of carotenoids. Without carotenoids to protect chlorophyll from photo-oxidation, the plant tissues lose their green pigment, resulting in a distinct bleaching effect that leads to the rapid necrosis and death of the weed.

Sulcotrione is mainly applied to corn fields. It is highly effective against major competitive weeds such as common lambsquarters, pigweed species, common ragweed, and other economically significant broadleaf weeds. Its efficacy is maximized when applied during the early growth stages of the weeds and the maize plant.

Application techniques typically involve post-emergence spraying at the 3 to 6-leaf stage of the crop. The active ingredient exhibits both foliar activity and limited residual soil activity, providing a degree of protection against subsequent flushes of weeds. This dual action helps in reducing the overall competitive pressure on the crop during the critical early growing period.

  • High selectivity for maize crops.
  • Rapid symptom development (bleaching).
  • Effective systemic translocation within weeds.
  • Good flexibility in tank mixing programs.

Safety precautions are essential when handling sulcotrione. Operators should wear appropriate protective equipment, including gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection. It is critical to adhere to label instructions and local regulations regarding drift management to prevent the herbicide from affecting nearby non-target crops, which may be sensitive to this chemical class.
