Sulphuric acid

Description

Sulphuric acid is utilized in professional agriculture primarily as a contact herbicide and a powerful desiccant. Due to its chemical properties, it is categorized as an inorganic compound that provides a rapid drying effect on plant tissues, making it a critical tool for pre-harvest management.

The mechanism of action is based on the immediate desiccation of green plant tissues through chemical burns. Upon contact, the acid causes protein coagulation and the destruction of cell membranes, leading to rapid water loss and the total collapse of the treated plant structures within a few hours.

It is specifically applied for the desiccation of crops such as potatoes (to clear the haulms) and various grain crops to facilitate mechanical harvesting. By rapidly killing the plant canopy, it reduces the moisture content of the crop and prevents the transfer of pathogens from the foliage to the tubers or grains.

The application of this substance requires specialized equipment constructed from acid-resistant materials, such as specific plastics or alloys, as standard metallic spraying machinery is prone to immediate corrosion. Precise calibration of spraying equipment is mandatory to ensure uniform coverage without damaging the crops being harvested.

Safety is the highest priority when handling sulphuric acid. It is highly corrosive and causes severe chemical burns upon contact with skin or eyes. Personnel must utilize full-body protective gear, respiratory protection, and adhere to strict safety protocols. Proper neutralization procedures must be available on-site in case of spills or emergency exposure.
