The mode of action of this substance involves the inhibition of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme. This enzyme is vital for fatty acid biosynthesis in plants. By blocking this process, tepraloxydim effectively disrupts cell development, leading to the yellowing, necrosis, and eventual total death of the target grass species.

It is effectively used on a wide range of crops including soybeans, sugar beets, oilseed rape, and potatoes. It is specifically targeted against aggressive annual and perennial monocot weeds such as Elymus repens (quackgrass), Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyardgrass), and various species of foxtail, which are common competitors for soil nutrients and moisture.
