This leads to the cessation of the synthesis of essential amino acids, specifically valine, leucine, and isoleucine, resulting in the rapid cessation of weed growth, chlorosis, and eventual death. The substance exhibits both foliar and soil activity.

The primary area of application for thiencarbazone-methyl is the protection of maize crops. The preparation effectively suppresses difficult-to-control weeds such as Chenopodium album, Amaranthus species, Polygonum, and certain types of millet. It is often formulated with a safener (e.g., cyprosulfamide), which ensures high selectivity and crop safety.
