Transfluthrin
Description
Transfluthrin is a highly effective insecticidal substance belonging to the chemical class of synthetic pyrethroids. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, specifically high volatility, it is widely utilized in the production of control agents targeting flying insects within enclosed spaces.
The mechanism of action of transfluthrin is based on the disruption of the insect's normal nervous system function. The substance acts on the sodium channels of nerve cell membranes, causing prolonged channel opening, which leads to persistent membrane depolarization. This induces immediate paralysis in pests, commonly known as the knockdown effect, ultimately resulting in mortality.
The primary purpose of transfluthrin is to protect against a broad spectrum of household pests, including mosquitoes, midges, flies, and moths. Unlike many other pyrethroids, transfluthrin exhibits significant fumigation activity, making it ideal for use in electric fumigators, coils, and mats, ensuring rapid diffusion of the active ingredient throughout the air.
In agronomic and agricultural settings, the substance is more frequently employed in storage facilities or structures adjacent to agricultural lands to control pest populations that interfere with product storage. It is important to note that transfluthrin is rarely used for direct application on agricultural crops due to its high volatility and rapid degradation under sunlight.
When using products based on transfluthrin, strict safety precautions must be followed. Prolonged exposure in enclosed rooms while fumigators are in operation is not recommended. It is essential to ensure adequate ventilation, avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes, and keep products out of the reach of children and away from food supplies.
