(Z)-7-dodecen-1-yl acetate
Description
(Z)-7-dodecen-1-yl acetate is a synthetic chemical compound classified as an insect sex pheromone. It serves as a vital component in modern Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, acting as an attractant for specific species of Lepidoptera (moths) rather than a direct toxic agent like traditional insecticides.
The mechanism of action relies on the biological manipulation of insect mating behavior. When deployed in the field through pheromone traps or mating disruption dispensers, the substance acts as a lure. In monitoring, it attracts male moths to traps to count population levels. In mating disruption, high concentrations saturate the environment, preventing males from finding females, thereby halting the reproductive cycle.
This substance is widely used in orchards, vineyards, and vegetable crops. It is particularly effective against various species of leafrollers, fruit moths, and other Lepidopteran pests that cause significant economic damage by feeding on buds, leaves, and ripening fruit.
Application instructions require precise timing and placement. Dispensers should be installed prior to the emergence of the first adult generation. The density of dispensers per hectare must be strictly followed according to the specific pest pressure levels to ensure sufficient pheromone concentration throughout the crop canopy for effective disruption.
Regarding safety, (Z)-7-dodecen-1-yl acetate is considered environmentally safe. It does not possess the toxicity associated with synthetic pesticides and poses no risk to non-target beneficial insects, bees, or mammals. Handlers should wear gloves during installation to prevent contamination of the dispensers, ensuring that the pheromone scent remains pure and effective for the target insects.
