(Z)-7-Tetradecenol

Description

(Z)-7-Tetradecenol is an organic compound classified as a long-chain unsaturated fatty alcohol. Within the agricultural industry, it is widely utilized as a potent insect pheromone component, serving as a primary tool in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for various horticultural and field crops.

The mechanism of action centers on behavioral manipulation, specifically mating disruption. By releasing (Z)-7-Tetradecenol into the canopy of crops, the substance interferes with the chemical communication between male and female moths. By saturating the environment with this pheromone, males are unable to track the plume emitted by females, which leads to a dramatic reduction in fertilization and subsequent egg-laying.

It is predominantly applied on orchard crops, such as apples and pears, as well as vineyards, targeting specific lepidopteran pests like leafrollers and bud moths. Unlike broad-spectrum pesticides, this compound is highly species-specific, ensuring that the target pest is suppressed without harming beneficial insects such as bees or predatory mites.

Field application involves the deployment of specialized dispensers or pheromone traps strategically placed throughout the field or orchard. Correct application requires understanding the biology of the pest, specifically the timing of the flight activity, to ensure that the disruption effect is present during the entire mating season of the target species.

  • Environmentally sustainable pest control.
  • No residue risks for agricultural products.
  • Compatible with other biological control agents.
  • Reduces reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides.

Precautions should be taken to avoid skin contact with the substance, as pheromone residues on clothing can inadvertently attract pests to the operator. It is recommended to handle dispensers with clean gloves and store the product in a cool, dark, and airtight environment to preserve the volatile integrity and chemical stability of the alcohol.
