Field heterogeneity analysis

A method of assessing soil and crop variation within a field to implement site-specific agricultural management strategies.

Также говорят: precision farming, variable rate application, yield mapping, intra-field variability

Field heterogeneity analysis utilizes satellite imagery, soil electrical conductivity mapping, and drone data to identify zones with different yield potential. By detecting these variations, agronomists can pinpoint specific areas where crop performance is compromised by nutrient deficiencies, drainage issues, or pests.

The practical application centers on variable rate technology (VRT), which allows for site-specific application of inputs rather than uniform treatment across the entire field. This approach optimizes resource use and improves sustainability by applying inputs precisely where they are needed most.

A common mistake is interpreting remote sensing data without ground truthing. It is crucial to physically inspect the field to verify whether the identified anomalies result from soil properties, management history, or temporary errors in sensor data before adjusting input rates.
