Biological yield

It is the total weight of the biomass produced by plants in a field, calculated before harvest based on plant density and grain weight.

Также говорят: potential yield, crop potential, biological production

Biological yield serves as a primary metric for assessing the genetic potential of a crop and the success of agronomic interventions throughout the growing season. It is determined by counting plants per unit area and evaluating the yield components of individual plants.

Farmers use this metric for pre-harvest planning, resource allocation, and benchmarking field performance. Crucially, biological yield represents the absolute potential and does not account for harvest losses caused by machinery, shattering, or pests, which always leads to a higher value than the final net yield.

A common pitfall is failing to account for crop heterogeneity. To ensure accuracy, sampling must be performed systematically across different soil zones to avoid overestimating or underestimating the final results.
