Plant density is a fundamental factor in determining crop yield potential. It ensures that plants receive adequate sunlight, moisture, and nutrients by balancing the space between individuals to maximize resource uptake.
Agronomists measure density from emergence through the harvest period. Excessive crowding often leads to plant competition, increased risk of lodging, and disease susceptibility. Conversely, sparse populations leave unused soil resources, often resulting in increased weed pressure.
Common errors include failing to account for field germination rates during seeding or improper seed depth, both of which cause uneven distribution and reduced crop uniformity.
