Depression (in agronomy)

A temporary slowing or cessation of plant growth and development caused by adverse environmental factors or external physiological stress.

Также говорят: plant stress, growth retardation, stunting

Plant depression occurs as a stress response to fluctuating temperatures, water deficit, or chemical impact from pesticide application. During this phase, metabolic processes slow down significantly, leading to visible signs like chlorosis, wilting, or stunted leaf development.

To mitigate this condition, agronomists utilize anti-stress formulations containing amino acids, seaweed extracts, and micronutrients. Proper timing of these interventions is crucial for restoring hormonal balance and allowing the plant to resume normal development.

A common error is applying heavy doses of nitrogen fertilizer while the crop is in a state of deep depression. This forces growth before the plant has recovered, often resulting in increased susceptibility to secondary infections or permanent physiological damage.
