Practically, managing these crops requires caution regarding pruning. A common mistake is over-pruning the side shoots, which are essential for producing the bulk of the yield in determinate plants. Unlike indeterminate types, these plants should generally not have their tops removed, as the plant naturally terminates growth on its own.
To ensure optimal performance, growers should focus on maintaining steady moisture levels throughout the flowering phase. Over-fertilization with nitrogen after the initial set of flowers can lead to unwanted vegetative growth late in the season, which potentially delays maturity and lowers crop quality.
