Critical seeding depth
The maximum depth at which a seed can be planted while still having enough stored energy for the sprout to reach the soil surface.

Critical seeding depth represents the biological threshold for successful germination and emergence. If seeds are placed beyond this depth, the embryo exhausts its nutrient reserves before reaching the soil surface, causing the seedling to die before photosynthesis can begin.
This depth is determined by seed mass and the physiological energy capacity of the specific crop. Small-seeded species have very shallow critical depths, while large-seeded species contain more stored energy, allowing them to emerge from deeper soil profiles.
A common agronomic error is over-deepening seeds to reach moisture in arid conditions. This practice often results in poor stand establishment, uneven emergence, and weak seedling vigor, as the plant spends excessive energy reserves just to reach the sunlight.
