Chlorophyll index

A metric representing the chlorophyll content in plant leaves, used for real-time monitoring of crop health and nitrogen status.

Также говорят: chlorophyll content, greenness index, N-index, SPAD value

The chlorophyll index serves as a physiological indicator of plant vigor, as this pigment is essential for solar energy conversion through photosynthesis. Agronomists utilize this index to perform rapid diagnostics of nitrogen deficiency, allowing for precise in-season variable rate fertilization without the need for extensive laboratory testing.

Measurements are best taken during critical growth stages, such as tillering or stem elongation, preferably in the morning. A common mistake is failing to account for genetic variability: since different hybrids exhibit distinct greenness levels, it is crucial to benchmark readings against reference strips where nutrient requirements have been fully met.
